L'Inno "Eternal Father" venne usato per la prima volta nel servizio religioso dal Rev.do Ernest Courtenay Carter.
Venne scritto nel 1860 da William Whiting (1825-1878) come una sorta di poema per uno studente che si preparava a partire per l'America.
John Bacco Dykes (1823-1876) ne compose la musica nel 1860 dando al brano il nome di "Melita" (dal nome latino di Malta).
Dykes scelse il nome pensando alla narrazione biblica del naufragio dell'apostolo Paolo.
Malta, infatti, era l'isola nella quale l'Apostolo giunse dopo che la sua nave affondò, come descritto in Atti 28,1.
È l'inno ufficiale della Marina Militare degli Stati Uniti.
